We understand that for a working parent or professional, the prospect of a “standing committee” is exhausting. However, between now and Christmas, Meldreth is entering a critical evidence-gathering phase for its Neighbourhood Plan (2025–2045).

Instead of an inexorable meeting schedule, we are looking for residents to take on “The Mini-Report”—a focused, time-bounded project of a few hours over a month that results in a two-page summary of needs and options for a specific village asset.

The 2-Hour “Deep Dive”: Topic-Specific Task Forces

You can choose to lead or contribute to a specific “sprint” based on your professional skills or family interests. Your goal is to produce the “Voice” for an amenity that might otherwise be overlooked.

1. Infrastructure & Family Logistics

  • The School-Run Audit: Use your daily route to Meldreth Primary School to identify specific safety gaps. Combine your data with Speed Camera stats and Local Highways Initiatives to propose a safer 20mph zone or improved school-gate infrastructure.
  • The Additional School Facilities: Work with the Local Schools to draft a report on the long-term funding needed for the out of budget facilites. This ensures the facility is named as a priority for developer contributions (S106).
  • Station Link Coordinator: If you are a commuter, we need a 90-minute assessment of the Cam Valley Community Rail Partnership link. Does the station need better lighting, more cycle racks for the Meldreth Cycling Club, or improved accessibility for Royston & District Community Transport?.

2. Community Assets & “Squeezed” Spaces

  • Village Hall Modernisation: The Meldreth Village Hall has secured grants for new tables and chairs, but we now need a focused survey on “forthcoming projects” like new interior doors for insulation and a professional surveyor’s report.
  • The Burial Ground Extension: With the Burial Ground (Fenny Lane) nearing capacity, we need someone to spend 3 hours researching potential adjacent land options—a critical legal requirement the village cannot ignore.
  • Youth Amenity Advocate: If your children are in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, or the Meldreth Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS), help us document the “amenity gap” for teenagers. What would keep them in the village safely rather than traveling to Royston?.1

3. Environment & “Green” Stewardship

  • The River Mel Audit: Partner with the Melwood Conservation Group or the River Mel Restoration Group for a one-off weekend session to document biodiversity or path erosion.
  • The Veg Club & Local Economy: Spend an evening drafting a policy for the “Community Orchard” or identifying abandoned spaces that could become allotments for the Meldreth Veg Club.

Professional Skills-Based Tasks

If you have a professional background in finance, law, or tech, you can contribute “virtual” hours that fit your schedule:

  • Financial Advisor (Grants): Groups like the Meldreth Bowls Club have successfully secured Rural England Prosperity Fund grants for accessible toilets. Can you spend 2 hours a month reviewing grant applications for the Friends of Holy Trinity or Meldreth Cares Community Support?.
  • Digital Lead (Neighbourhood Watch): Help the Neighbourhood Watch or the Parish Council modernise their communication by setting up digital alert systems or interactive maps.
  • Legal/Policy Proofreader: Review the draft “Basic Conditions” to ensure they align with the South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Corporate Plan for Sustainable Homes and Vibrant Places.

---

Why This Works for You

  • No Endless Meetings: You contribute a specific “Mini-Report” or data set and then step back.
  • Lived Experience is Evidence: Your frustration with a muddy path in Melwood or a lack of childcare at the Lookout Club is the robust data we need to change policy.
  • Direct Financial Benefit: An adopted Neighbourhood Plan gives Meldreth access to 25% of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) from developers, rather than just 15%—more money for the Recreational Ground and local services.

Join the “Working Group” Sprint: Sign up for a specific topic at https://meldrethplan.org.uk or contact Roger James (07808 235873). You tell us your available hours, and we will find the specific task to match.
